Comment by Sieglinde W. Alexander Comment to: "Gagged" by Juegen Schubert Who carries the responsibility for destroying a human being? "Gagged" presents the evidence of human endurance, brutally inflicted harm, and no one seems to be responsible. He was a child abandoned by his mother because he was the result of an affair his mother had with a Russian soldier, who was a part of the troops that occupied Germany after 1945. Juegen Schubert was abandoned, sent to an orphanage because his mother's husband did not want the child; thrown away like an unworthy object. As if it was not already enough endurance for a child to be deprived of the most vital needs for a healthy development, a loving connection to a mother, but instead he was abused, misused, humiliated and drugged by those who were supposed to care for him. To silence the inconvenience of natural emotions such as crying or rebellion against the harsh treatment, he was chained with medication and more abuse. Conditioned and ill-treated by the inhuman, careless system of the orphanage, and the black pedagogy of the child rearing practices, he continued throughout his life fighting the label of being not "mentally" fit. Postwar conditions in Germany presented harsh living conditions for all citizens but that does not excuse the violent maltreatment of children. Now, 60 years later, German society is still labeling
those inflicted by trauma.
