Stress after birth causes learning difficulties in later life

High volumes of stress-induced CRH in young mice reduces subsequent
communication between neurons and impairs learning performance

Severe stress can have a negative effect on intellectual functions, such as
learning and memory. According to scientists from the Max Planck Institute
of Psychiatry in Munich, adult mice also have greater problems with learning
if they are exposed to stress immediately after birth.

The researchers were able to identify numerous changes in the brain tissue
of the adult animals. For example, the neurons had fewer synapses between
each other and their plasticity was reduced. Both phenomena cause a reduced
communication between the cells and might explain the losses in learning and
memory capacity.
